Embossed Sterling Earrings with an Abstracted Flora and Scrolling Design
These elegant lightweight hand-stamped abstract organic earrings were made with thin sterling silver sheet metal. I hammered the disk into an antique steel die creating the embossed abstracted scroll and floral design.
- Materials: Sterling Silver, 14K Yellow Gold-Filled Ear Wires
- Surface: Darkening Patina Applied
- Stone: Faceted Round - Simulated Garnet
- Earring Height: ~26 mm
- Earring Width: ~26 mm
The process of hammering to emboss thin sheet metal with a design creates areas of depth in the metal making a low-relief design. The grooves made by embossing give the overall shape more physical strength than if the metal stayed flat. Through this hammering process I can make larger-scale earrings that are lightweight and comfortable to wear.
The surface of the back of the earrings is a reverse image of the front. The created furrows mimic the front of the earrings, making the design less defined but no less interesting, as the indentations catch the light and the eye almost as much as the front. I have applied a darkening patina to the silver to help highlight the pattern and texture of these earrings.
